Cricket In Johannesburg
āGet to Johannesburg and get out!ā is a common statement from many who have never been to Jo'burg but when the cricket is on you will discover Jo'burg isnāt so bad. In fact, it is not bad at all (where we go!) and remains my favourite South Africa city. Thereās a ruthless yet stylish, non-brochure existence that I love. Living in Sandton, mind you, is far from the dangers of downtown, which certainly aren't as they were when I first visited in 1997.

With a day spare before the test, head downtown to Museum Africa or the similarly awing but chilling Apartheid Museum. Further afield, take a tour to Soweto (South West Townships) and visit Mandela House Museum in Vilakasi StreetĀ before heading back to suave Sandton and our first of two dinner parties and a night on the square.
4km from the enormously tiny āBull Ringā, Sandton is no longer a place just to be safe but a place to live. The stunning hotel with rooftop pool, gym, and free area shuttle (for the cricket!), is at the Gautrain station that brings you safely & swiftly from O. R. Tambo International Airport so you can be swiftly living it large in Nelson Mandela Square, home to impressive cafes, bars, pubs, cinemas, and restaurants.
After 7 nights in the ābig smokeā of Jo'burg head to glitzy Sun City for awesome golf, if you haven't already hacked Wanderer's Golf Club, or go east to famous Kruger National Park and the wilds of Africa. This said, it doesnāt matter where you go in South Africa, every city has nearby private or national parks to indulge the wilds. And if the wilds of the bush are not your thing, rest assured the smooth wilds of cricket in South Africa will create a long-lasting desire to come again and again and again.
