Australian Cricket In Colombo

We make no bones about enjoying Tour Games more than shorter versions of the game. These quintessential ‘club cricket’ matches that often go for just 3 days, or in Sri Lanka 2022 4-days, offer more than just consecutive lazy days of leisure and pleasure. The get you closer to the game than any other format.

To be more specific, a Tour Game in Colombo is our favourite (Potchefstroom, South Africa, and 3W’s Oval, Barbados, 2nd & 3rd) when played at P Saravanamuttu Oval. This tiny field in the backblocks of Colombo epitomises suburban cricket. If you didn’t know the ground was there, you would go straight past, but as a tourist, if not for cricket you wouldn’t be going down this lonely road, over the railway line, anyway.

When you walk up the dusty steps and onto the low roof, single level terrace, you are met with shallow steps leading to the concrete boundary wall. On the terrace sits misaligned antiquated colonial bench seating that stare across the field to the famed scoreboard framed by too-thick-to-cut ivy. The open terrace to your right, grassy, palmed, and lonely if you were to find access to it. On our first visit in 1999, three horses and one security guard were the only occupants of that roofless vantage.

The only seating in the ground is where you first enter, adjacent the player’s changerooms, and sweeping to your left. On the wall of the stand, traditional boards honouring success of local and international cricketers adorn the back wall, transporting you to days far removed from today’s intense and focussed game. This is a ground you come to relax, put your feet up, and unwind; more so if it is your first week of holiday.

When you kick back amidst the slow, timeless appeal, you may find it hard to believe that England, who attract no fewer than 10,000 spectators to Sri Lanka, played a test match at P Sara in 2012, whilst New Zealand played in 2019. It is such a unique, quirky little ground with zero signage, you may find it difficult to believe anything was played here let alone Test Cricket.

On the Australian Cricket Tour to Sri Lanka 2022, Australia is scheduled to play a 4-day tour game, that we hope will be here. In 2004 we played at Colombo Cricket Club opposite the Singhalese Sports Club where Australia and Sri Lanka always play the last Test of the series, so we could end up at CCC, another cracking, former Test Cricket ground!

No matter where we play, if you prefer to decompress at the Tour Game and not in the Tea Country, our Tour Game Tour includes 6 nights in Colombo, to marry with the start of your 1st Test Tour.

If your Australian Cricket Tour of Sri Lanka 2022 starts here, your transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport to our stunning Colombo hotel is included.

We have a welcome dinner the night before the game, when we will detail on firstly how to find the ground, and then how to get there. We don’t offer match day transfers as it is easier, quicker, and more affordable to jump in a rickshaw and buzz your way to Borella, some 5km from our amazing rooftop swimming pool and bar, to where we will buzz straight after play!
