List Of Test Cricket Grounds
With very-limited test cricket played in each country each year, surprisingly, year-on-year the list of test cricket grounds grow.
More nations playing Test Cricket grows that list but even nations with decades-old established test cricket grounds continue to commission new venues on which to not bowl 90-overs in one day.
From 1877 to the end of 1999 (123 years), 80 grounds hosted Test Cricket. Yet in the years from August 29, 2001 - September 09, 2024, 44 new venues were added to the List of Test Cricket Grounds.
There's not enough test cricket played to warrant so many venues, but it's not test cricket the investment is made for. The proliferation of franchise, bilateral, and multilateral white-ball cricket has brought the development of regional venues, but do they need to host Test Cricket?
Out with the old and in the with new for the sake of playing one test?
Of the 44 test cricket grounds commissioned since 2001, 25 have hosted just 3-Tests or less, taking the ‘traditional red-ball game’ from grounds that have hosted Test Cricket for 100+ years.
In England, the likes of Trent Bridge, Headingley, and Old Trafford forsaken for Cardiff, Durham, and Southampton, whilst Bellerive, Australia, was ditched for Canberra. Naturally, the latter don't mind.
If a regional cricket body invests in a stadium to host money-spinning white-ball cricket, that’s fine. Yet hosting a Test Match to pay for the new ground, which in the process takes the game from a traditional venue is wrong.
It's politics of course, which too is wrong.
It’s not Cricket West Indies fault, but we miss playing at the famous Antigua Recreation Ground; a result of the unnecessary large and inaccessible Sir Vivian Richard's Cricket Stadium Cricket World Cup 2007.
If cricket is to improve in the region, West Indians must support the game as once they did. This won't happen until the game is back at ‘Sir Vivian Richards Recreation Ground’!
Though decrying the loss of one great Test Cricket Ground, we love ticking the box on new venues. A ‘new venue’ is one you haven’t been to, not merely one with still running cement and no running water.
Since the Australia India Test Match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, 2001, Australia has toured India 7 times, yet not returned to Kolkata. Many will only tour India to tick the box on Eden Gardens, not Pune, Indore, Ranchi, or Rajkot.
I often hear, 'taking the game to the people', but in 2024 any sport is available live on your phone even though affordable travel allows you to see a game with your own eyes. In 2024 and beyond 'people must take it to the game'!
That said, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai only holds 32,000 yet is never full on any Test day. If you can't get 32,000 in a city of 13,000,000 to attend a Test Match, 50,000 won't go in Ranchi with just 1,500,000 so why play Test Cricket there?
Because it is not about physical attendance, it is TV coverage. Spectators are a pain in the arse for venue administrators, and cost a lot to look after for very little return.
1000+ people will tour with us to see Australia India Test Match in Kolkata. Eden Gardens is a big, bad, and historical bastion of Indian Cricket that people want to experience. Where is Dehradoon???
Of the 30 venues that hosted test cricket since December 15, 1933, there are still 19 Test Cricket Grounds in India fighting to host a game, so you can be excused for not having heard of present day Dehradoon or Rajkot.
We love our traditional game in traditional venues and are powerless to stop this ever-growing....
