Cricket In Port Elizabeth
With or without cricket, Port Elizabeth (P.E.) is very cool but more so with cricket. The stunning Algoa Bay (above), the lovely people of ‘The Friendly City’, the restaurants & pubs, and quaint oval in St George’s Park make P.E. a relaxing and very lovable city to spend 7-nights in Humewood, just 10 mins from the airport!
Cracking Read:Â 90 Overs In One Day
Should you fly into Port Elizabeth International Airport simply jump in a cab for the 10mins (in traffic) drive down the hill to the hotel. It is the easiest airport to arrive for any cricket match. As you will be flying 'domestic' you can be on the sands of Algoa Bay or lounging by our pool quicker than you can say "One Castle Lager please!" Well, at least quicker than it will take the beer to arrive!
Towering over Algoa Bay, the Hotel is next to Brooke’s Hill Pavilion, home to The Coachman; arguably the best steak house in South Africa. Here we will host an awesome dinner party with all drinks included before (when you will receive your match tickets) and after the Test.
Lounging for five days on the grassy knolls of vibrant St George’s Park, amid the constant tootling of the famous brass band, will make you wish we played in P.E. more often. As the ground is just 4.5km from the hotel, you can like many (or me!) walk to the game, or simply call a cab and you will be there in 5-6mins for A$5-6 between 4 of you. A perfect reason for not including match-day transfers!
If the walk to or from the game isn't enough to get the heart going, perhaps a round of golf at windy Humewood Golf Club will. If you are more historically inclined when walking, put on your shoes and stroll the 5km Donkin Heritage Trail through the city. Further out of town, hire a car and hit famous Jeffries Bay or outstanding Addo Elephant National Park** just 90km and 45km from P.E. respectively.
Addo is a must-see for the abundance of elephants in the aptly named park that neighbours the private Schotia Game Reserve both commonly visited in one day from P.E. You can stay overnight in both parks so consider either before or after the Test. You won't be disappointed. With 4 days to invest before the Cape Town Test in 2018, we visited Addo & Schotia the day after the Test (A$150 payable at the time). We look to do the same in 2021 but only once we know we are coming back to P.E. Keep your fingers crossed!
