Cricket in Gqeberha | Port Elizabeth
We have loved Port Elizabeth (P.E. as she will always be known) or the now near impossible to pronouce Gqeberha, since our first visit way back in 1997 when Ian Healy hit Hansie Cronje for 6 to win the 2nd Test by 2 wickets.

Yet like Durban, things have changed. Our visit last Nov. 2025 revealed a disappointing slide in fortunes for P.E.. When the restaurant (above) says, "Take a taxi!", 300m to the hotel, you know things weren't as they were;
"Municipal chaos, out-of-control crime, and governance problems", as written on South African publication 'Business Tech' a few weeks after I was there.
We survived it! Like soooooo many places, things are never as bad on the ground as they are on your telly!
Still, this is why we do pre-tour, tours!

Pre-touring is to not only know where to go, but more imporantly, not to go.
Saying this, the area may be 'sliding' but to the restaurant that suggested I take a taxi, I would go each night. It is worth the 3mins in an Uber, as are the beaches for which PE is famed, Hobie Beach and King's Beach on Algoa Bay.

Significantly, the life-guard patrolled King's Beach is opposite our beautiful new hotel at Boardwalk Mall.
So new it is, it isn't yet open. I saw the 'building' behind the Boardwalk, called them, and locked us in, understanding they will be open well-before we arrive.
The Boardwalk (above) was always a low-key off-street place to eat and shop; however a few years back underwent a massive redevelopment.
Our hotel is accessed inside this sweet complex that has three supermarkets, restaurants, fast foods, cinema, a casino, and the aptly named 'Hello Beach' Kitchen and Bar that looks out to King's beach and iconic Shark Rock Pier (below).

When you fly in on Oct 15, we'll meet & greet you at Chief Dawid Stuurman Intl. Airport and whizz you to the safest place to live in P.E., in the lazy Summerstrand with a kilometres long promenade on which to get your morning steps up.
Arriving three nights before the Test, will leave you two full days to get about.

Some drive along the coast to famed Jeffrey's Bay, whilst others tee-up on windy Humewood Links (above) down the road from our hotel. I prefer quaint and cracking 9 hole Walmer Estate Golf Club, amid PE suburbia (below). We will even get the lawn bowls out if time permits at Woods Bowling Club.

Your focus should include impressive Addo Elephant National Park (below) and neighbouring Schotia Private Game Reserve. These are best done on Oct 16, as you will not get back to PE until after 10pm, on a tour that combines both.

If you went to 'Addo' on the 17th you will miss our regulation pre-test soiree the night before the test. This is where, if you are joining us here, you can meet everyone you will enjoy the game with.

You will also learn about how we get to St George's Park, where lounging on the grassy knolls amid the constant tootling of the famous St George's Brass Band, may make you wish we always played in P.E. Reserved seats are included as standard in all hotel tours, but if you wish to lounge with us on the grass, we recommend it!

We will drive you there and back but on our way home we stop at one our favourite pubs in all of South Africa, Bridge Street. It won't be the only place to go, but it is a great place to start, unless you continue home, which will be fine.

And when the game is done and won, we will get you back to the Chief's Airport for your onward (or homeward) flight on Oct 23 to mighty Cape Town!!
