INDIAN RAILWAYS - RAILWAY STATIONS

When enjoying an Australian Cricket Tour to India, there is a great chance that you will experience the uniqueness of travelling on Indian Railways between matches. In many cities of the world, you travel from 'city name' main station to 'city name' main station without much thought. India is vastly different when without careful attention you may find yourself disgorged from a train up to 70km from where you thought you'd be, though still arriving in 'Mumbai'.

Even travelling between big cities, it is rare you will arrive or depart from a station with the city's name in the title. From 11 stations in Mumbai, only one is called Mumbai. There is only one 'New Delhi' station from 11, only one named Kolkata from 5 terminals, and for Hyderabad you travel to Secunderabad, an entirely different city.

Purely by accident (I'm sure the station was there before the stadium), primary stations in most cities are usually closest to the cricket stadium, though not always closest to our preferred hotels, as a side.

If you arrive the day before or on game day, staying at a hotel near the primary station won't leave you far to reach the game, and why we state the walking distance to the ground. Though it is but A$0.20c/km in a rickshaw to 'save your legs'!

You still need to manage the maelstrom and book your ticket to/from the best station and save the headache of lengthy surprise commutes. Stations listed below are in order of ‘importance’ (a term Indian Railways use for cities, trains, and stations). Some ‘minor’ stations are listed at 3 or 4 for their proximity to the ground. They could also be closer to your hotel so if your train makes a brief stop enroute to the main station, you can jettison early.

You find faster trains with wider choice of travel classes, and more of them, between important cities. For us, every cricket city is important, though we may flinch at playing in Rajkot!

That said, when it comes to Indian Railways, there is no rhyme nor reason for us to care why one train leaves from a station in the boonies and another from the station opposite your hotel, both going to the same place. Let’s not forget more than 20m people travel on Indian Railways every day so there is always demand no matter how poorly positioned the station may be to the cricket.

In years past, choosing a station for better arrival or departure times was more important than location or journey duration (when leaving Rajkot, take the first available!). With pre-paid rickshaws available from ‘important’ stations, worrying about being fleeced at 1am by a rickshaw-wallah who swears by the imaginary one-way system is a thing of the past! It just depends what time you want to get to bed.

When you enjoy our Australian Cricket Tour to India we include all Indian Railways journeys between cities so you don't have to worry about arriving at the wrong station, we worry for you!

Search trains on IRCTC by station name or letter code. If you're having trouble booking, this will help:
