Durban is well-known for three things. The ‘Golden Mile’, Butcher Boys, & Kingsmead.

During our visit in November 2025, we quickly learned that things have changed and we will not go anywhere near the 'Golden Mile'. Instead, we move to the stunning and super-safe beach enclave of Umhlanga (Oomshlan-Ga) Rocks.

When you fly into King Shaka Intl. Airport we will meet & greet you, and transfer you to our cool hotel flush in the middle of everywhere you need to be, for two nights before the game. You will also have one night after the game to soak in all Umhlanga has to offer.

On discovering Umhlanga's development & amenities, I wished for a Durban Test Match so we could stay at one of the nicest and safest places in South Africa, when watching cricket.

My wish was granted.

Though we are 20mins drive to the game, once you step outside you will feel our reason for staying here, instead of our stalwart Hilton Durban opposite Kingsmead0

Sadly, but not surprisingly, Hilton closed its doors February 2026. As convenient as it was living 200m from the cricket, we were never going to stay knowing how amazing Umhlanga is, and how slimy and dangerous downtown Durban had become.

This is why we do our pre-tour tours!

So, as we love to do, we will have a pre-test party for you to meet everyone enjoying the game with us. You'll get your fashions, learn how we get to the game, and get your match tickets if these are not sent electronically.

We get you to and from the game, and out each night somewhere different, especially knowing you only have minutes to walk, to countless places to dine & imbibe. If you don't simply want to hang out on the beachfront.

Should the game end early, from a cultured perspective stroll the Valley Of 1000 Hills on an organised tour, or nearby Tala Game Reserve.

If you love a hack, closer to home is Mount Edgecombe Country Club, but you are not short of choice between Umhlanga and Durban City, which includes Royal Durban Golf Club, within the furlongs of Greyville Racetrack.

Speaking of, Michaelmas Handicap is scheduled for the evening of Day 3 of the Test. We will arrange transport to the track after play, and back home after the meet.

When all is said and done, we will get you back to the airport on what would be Day 6 of the Test, and hope to see you in Port Elizabeth for 8 nights on the Eastern Cape for the 2nd Test.
