“Get to Johannesburg and get out!”

A statement expressed by many that have never been to my favourite city in South Africa, and where I love to put my feet up and watch cricket at famous 'Wanderers Bullring'.

When I was in Joburg Oct-Nov 2025, preparing for the Australian Cricket Tour to South Africa 2026, walking from my hotel to Wanderers Stadium (25mins) I took a call from someone asking about security in South Africa because, as they told me, "It's too dangerous to go on your own!"

"I am actually in Joburg now, walking to the cricket ground!"

"Nah, I heard it's a place you can't walk around!"

"Well, this is probably my 50th visit to Joburg, and I've never felt as safe at any time over the last 30 years than I do now!"

If you believe Johannesburg is too dangerous to visit, and you're unwilling to take our on-the-street experienced word for it, then stay home.

Otherwise, we sooooo look forward to welcoming you to big, bad, exciting Joburg, that has a stylish, non-brochured existence; except those stylish brochures of Rolls Royce whose showroom is opposite our hotel in flashy Melrose Arch.

As it happens, the Rolls Royce showroom is next to the McClaren showroom, which is next to the Aston Martin showroom.

If you're worried about crime in Joburg, there are far bigger fish than you in our chic high-end gated precinct of bars, pubs, hotels, restaurants, boutique shopping, supermarkets, convenience foods, and security to make every luxury car owner and lowly cricket supporter comfy.

From a social perspective, once we meet you at O.R.Tambo International Airport (JNB) and transfer you to our cool hotel, you probably won't need to go anywhere else such is the choice for dining and imbibing.

Still we are never one to sit around so we will get further afield in our 8 nights here, which includes 3 nights before the test at nearby Wanderers Stadium. It is a safe 8-10 mins walk to the ground, which is why we won't drive you.

If you fly Qantas from Australia, you'll arrive at the hotel at 6pm-8pm. This leaves you two full days before the test to do as you please such as flop by the pool or take it easy in the cool neighbourhood.

If you want to jump straight into 'Jozi' safely, and without waiting for Uber, we recommend the incredibly affordable City Sightseeing 'Hop-On Hop-Off' Bus Tours.

The bus stops outside our hotel to take you to Apartheid Museum, and Nelson Mandela Foundation, along with Soweto (South West Townships) for Mandela House Museum and Vilakasi Street. There is also a splendid guided art-gallery tour.

The one day ticket is A$30, whereas the two day ticket is a A$80, plus entry to each attraction extra.

After two days sightseeing around this pretty cool, heavily wooded, and jacaranda lined city, we'll have a pre-test soiree at the hotel (below) including dinner and drinks, and when you'll get your match tickets and fashions, over a cracking good night before the big game.

Should the game end early, you can tee-off at some awesome golf courses, including the nearby Wanderer's Golf Club, behind the cricket ground, otherwise hang out at nearby Sandton City or Rosebank Mall for a change of 'glitzy scenery'.

After 8 suave nights, we will get you back to O.R. Tambo the following day for your onward flight, if indeed you are flying, otherwise travel well.
