Australian Cricket In Galle
The first match we saw in Sri Lanka was at Galle Cricket Ground, an ODI vs Sri Lanka on the Australian Cricket Tour to Sri Lanka 1999; back in the day when tri-nation tournaments were common, and nations toured for 6+ weeks.
Our second match was against India, incredibly, the following day. How the game has changed.
Playing ODI's on consecutive days is now unheard of. T20's are rarely played back-to-back as players need 'rest'. Training sessions last longer than some T20's so what are they resting from?

With 3 games in Galle in 1999, one test in each of 2004, 2011, 2016, and two tests in 2022, along with pre-tour tours, we have spent much time in Sri Lanka's south coast Galle. Although the test cricket ground is the worst of its kind for what it should be, lounging at this unique venue is one cricket's great pleasures.

It was a gift that the Australian Cricket Tour to Sri Lanka 2022 was played in Galle, giving us 17 nights at our beach resort in Hikkaduwa (below). It was also curse, as Colombo and Kandy are great places and we missed going, yet no one complained about living it large in this tourist hotspot for more than 2 weeks.
Beaches, surf, bars, restaurants, cafes, well-being, turtles, diving, cooking, fishing, golf, and countless hotels are on the coast 15km either side of Galle.
From Hikkaduwa to the north, Koggala to the south, and Galle Fort in the middle, there is a world of options.
In 2025, with Sri Lanka rebounded from their depths of 2022, we move closer to Galle.
Our lower-priced hotel is the brand new Blue Beach Galle Hotel. With a rooftop bar & restaurant, and opposite 'Beach of Bonavista', we are barely 10mins walk to our much-loved The Shack Beach Cafe and just 10mins drive from the cricket.
PLEASE KNOW: There is no pool at Blue Beach
Our other hotel takes us back to famed Unawatuna Beach and spectacular Araliya Beach Resort.
When you fly in to join us in Galle, we meet you at Colombo's Bandaranaike Airport and drive you to Galle for 8 nights on the popular south coast.
Along with the transfer to Galle, everyone on our hotel tours also receives cool Sri Lanka 2025 apparel, dinner parties with drinks, and match tickets.
If you stay at Blue Beach Hotel, just 3.4km from Galle International Cricket Stadium we won't 'transfer' you to/from the game. Walk out of the hotel, and make your own way by public bus or rickshaw, which is far more convenient, and affordable!
If you stay at Araliya, return match day transfers are included.
The Australian Cricket Tour to Sri Lanka 2022 also saw both tests played in Galle, but with 4 days scheduled break between tests. With the first test ending in 3 days, we had 6 days to fill. It wasn't hard.
Although we only have 3 days between Tests in 2025, there is still plenty of time to do Sri Lanka cooking classes, tee-up at unique Eagles Catalina Golf Course at Koggala Airforce Base, along a live runway (below), visit rainforests, go boating, learn to dive, surf, or simply while away the time before the 2nd test.
**HOT TIP: DO NOT VISIT Yala National Park. It is rubbish**
2 tests in Galle is not ideal, but will be fun; especially living close to Unawatuna and Galle Fort, and the cricket where you have cold beer in a can, and hot lunch served to your seat, if we can secure the tickets!
If you don't want lunch at the ground you can, as we have always said, pop-out at the break for lunch at the markets opposite the ground, or enjoy a glass of misery at Sydney Hotel (below) and be back in your seat without missing a ball.
It's not often one says 'the best seats in the house are at square leg', but in Galle you have little choice. The ground is small with most of the vantage being open embankments, and one small public grandstand at deep third.
For those that love to sit behind the bowler's arm, there are no seats that look up and down the wicket. The only way to do so is from atop the famous 16th Century Dutch Fort (below).
Until we can confirm tickets in the Galle Cricket Club, all match tickets will be in the public grandstand.

After Galle, we get you back to Colombo for your flight home, or to Jaffna, after which you'll have a few more tales!
