Sea-Tea-Sea Road Trip

We love road trips, and when chance comes to create one on our Australian Cricket Tours we don't pass it up.

On our Australian Cricket Tour To Sri Lanka 2022, we drove one lap of the country on our Four Points Road Trip, visiting the furthest compass points of Sri Lanka's mainland. We thought about it again, but opted to drive one (near) straight line across the country.

After 2 nights in Colombo, we drive into the hills for 2 nights in the cool tea-town of Nuwara Eliya. It is then to beautiful Ella for 2 nights, and onto the hip east coast flop-spot of Arugam Bay to create our Sea-Tea-Sea Road Trip. We'll have 2 nights in 'A Bay' before driving to the 1st Test in Colombo or Galle.

This cool drive takes us between the 2 widest points of Sri Lanka, ticking the box on yet another unique geographic measure.

Though we wend up & down through the tea country, on reaching the east coast it's a near horizontal line between Colombo and Sangamankanda with just .05 degree difference of latitude. #Cool

Our detailed Sea-Tea-Sea Road Trip is:

Day 1, January 19 (TBC):

When you land into Colombo on your preferred airline, we will meet you at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer you to our cool hotel, Cinnamon Red.

If you fly the same day from Australia to Colombo, it is likely you will arrive late in the evening. As such...

Day 2, January 20 (TBC):

Day to recover from your journey. We will help orient you with cool Colombo for a casual sightsee, or you can simply laze by the rooftop pool all day.

Tonight we have dinner & drinks at famous Cricket Club Cafe.

Day 3, January 21 (TBC):

We start by stopping at Kanatte Cemetery (one of two Commonwealth War Graves in Colombo) where 55 Australians rest. 64 Australians rest at Liveramentu Cemetery.

After paying our respects, we drive to Hatton, the base for walking to Adam's Peak, in the Sripada Peak Wilderness Sanctuary. February is perfect to climb yet a midnight start for 5 hours walking with hundreds upon thousands to see the sunrise from Sri Lanka's holiest place is best done when travelling alone. If you really want to climb, you must leave Colombo one day earlier. Contact us if you wish to walk Adam's Peak.

After lunch in Hatton, we continue our wend to the very cool Nuwara Eliya, the summer retreat for Sri Lanka's well-heeled, where we stay for 2 nights at The Grand Hotel. Arriving by 4pm is perfect for sundowners on the terrace of Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.

With dinner included, tuck in early to tuck in early to hike to World's End within Horton Plains National Park, one Sri Lanka's most popular destinations; if you wish to walk!

Day 4, January 22 (TBC):

Horton Plains is a 40km drive and requires a 4am start to fight the entrance (vehicle) throng to reach the escarpment after a 2-3 hours easy walk for the best views, before mist rolls in.

World's End IS NOT INCLUDED.

If you've never done this famed walk (below) and would like to, this is payable (US$60+) at the time (we'll organise it for you!). You will be back by 12pm.

For those staying home, the morning is yours to do as you please. Laze by the pool, or walk the gardens, markets, or tee up on the beautiful golf course.

At 1pm we'll drive somewhere for lunch, and onto view points, waterfalls, and signature sights around Nuwara Eliya.

We'll be back by 5pm for sundowners and dinner, which is included.

Day 5, January 23 (TBC):

After a scrumptious breakfast, we drive to Nanu Oya and board the beautifully slow, winding train to Ella.

The train is better than the bus to experience the tea-scapes and quaint railway stations. You can ride in the engine (with a tip, below!) for a unique view of this very popular journey.

We'll have lunch in Ella before checking in for 2 nights at our swish town centre hotel. Don't get comfy as the train to Badulla leaves at 5pm. We're not taking the train instead taking photos of it crossing famous 9 Arches Bridge.

Wander back & forth over the bridge, clamber up & down the hillsides for different vantage points, and before you know it the train from Badulla will cross just before 7pm, after which is dinner at the hotel.

Day 6, January 24 (TBC):

Today we enjoy a lazy 4 hour drive visiting Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory, view points, and Badulla. We will visit iconic Dunhinda Falls and the oldest wooden bridge in Sri Lanka; Bogoda Bridge.

Lunch is included.

We return early-afternoon to explore the gorgeously quaint Ella, or you can take a slow hike to Ella Rock Viewpoint. Allow 3 hours, before returning to hotel for dinner.

Day 7, January 25 (TBC):

Leaving the hotel after breakfast, we'll stop at Ravanna Waterfall, Secret Waterfall and other viewpoints on the drive to amazing Arugam Bay.

We hit the coast in time for a lunch, which is included, and an afternoon on the beach, sipping cocktails and fermented freshness.

Arugam Bay | Sri Lanka | Australian Cricket Tours

'A Bay' is the east coast's hot spot, akin to the west coast's Hikkaduwa (where we live when at a test match in Galle), only smaller. Woodfired pizzas, burger bars, seafood grills, vegan alleys, swish cafes, and funky bars line busy Panama Road, which at night is a glow with the flow of people seeking their perfect kick back.

Day 8, January 26 (TBC):

Happy Australia Day!

For those that didn't visit Sri Lanka's eastern-most point, Sangamankanda, in 2022, jeeps will take us to the point and back in 2 hours, making it not so exhaustive as 2022.

After Sangamankanda, the day is yours to do as you please. Flop on A Bay, bar hop to Pottivul, hire a surf board, or Twitchers can focus on Sri Lanka's premier birdlife sanctuary, Kumana National Park to where a visit can be booked & paid for at the time.

We clink glasses for one last night in A Bay as tomorrow we're off to the 1st Test of our Australian Cricket Tour To Sri Lanka 2025.

Day 9, January 27 (TBC):

Leaving at 8am, we'll get you to Galle (Hikkaduwa) in 5 hours or Colombo in 7 hours both using the Southern Expressway.

With a stop for lunch, we'll check-in by 4pm to end our lush Sea-Tea-Sea Road Trip.

We hope you've enjoyed it!
