*We no longer offer twin-share unless you book to share a room with someone you know. If you are travelling alone, you must book SINGLE or phone a friend.
From a humble capital with just two high rise towers in 1999, the skyline is now, by comparison, Manhattan-esque with soaring office, hotel, apartment, shopping, and entertainment towers.
Along with casinos, cafes, culture, and the new 356m Lotus Tower, there is an ever-changing Colombo, reached via ever-better road and traffic distribution.
There is not a visit to Colombo when one decides that a newly found locale is 'the place to come'. Dutch Hospital Precinct now has 8 Dutch, Irish, British, and Sri Lankan pubs alongside crab shacks, burger bars, Italian, cafes, and firey Sri Lankan cuisine.
It is not just pubs and restaurants within that precinct, but hotel rooftop bars & pools are attractions themselves. It's as if all new Colombo hotels are developed from the rooftop, down.
Suffice to say, 'apres-play' is one of the cricket world's easiest for Colombo is small, yet vast in her choices. We always long to return to this glistening under-rated capital, more so in 2025 if living in the 'fresh from the showroom' lakeside hotel*, that opened in January 2023.
(*Pricing closer the time will determine the hotel that we stay. A new 'minimum' hotel rate is being introduced in Colombo will also effect choices!)
Colombo's newest branded bedtime tower is within a shopping mall & residential tower. Outside your room are cafes, designer stores, a sports bar, cinema, bowling alley, restaurants, and a stylish food court serving chilled beer on the terrace overlooking the lake. Swill it quickly, as sunset from the hotel pool bar, 10 floors above (below), is cracking!
Behind the hotel is famous Park Street Mews where a world of dining and imbibing has been served for 20 years, whilst up the road is our ever-favoured Cricket Club Cafe (below).
Governed by our long-time friends, Gabby & James from Melbourne, we will hit this famous landmark more than once, an easy 20mins walk on the way home from the cricket at the SSC.
Like its popular sister in Galle, the SSC could use a contemporary make-over. It's a small venue whose scoreboard is its most striking element among after-thought stands and embankments.
There is no one better place to sit than another in the SSC. It is tranquil, and pleasant, with a welcoming entrance (below), which is what makes cricket in Colombo a delight. You can't help but look forward to it.
When you land in Sri Lanka for this 'Capital Test', we include return transfers from Colombo's Bandaranaike Intl. Airport, 2 dinner parties with drinks, match tickets, and cool Sri Lanka 2025 apparel to stand out from the crowd.
Speaking of crowds, Colombo isn't all glass towers, cool pools, and rooftop bars. The fervour of Sri Lanka is still very prevalent in colourful Pettah markets.
Opposite rustic Colombo Fort Railway Station, where many a movie and music video are still made for the antiquated backdrop, the mayhem of Pettah selling food, clothes, & crap, remains a favourite to wander across the cricket world.
Adjacent Pettah is Fort, a namesake of the Portuguese that built one, Dutch that occupied it, and the British that razed it. This once off-limits area is leafy streets of colonial architecture and an escape from the bustle of life in nearby Pettah.
To keep connection with history, wander out of Fort and down the coastal path along Galle Face Green for sundowners at ageing Galle Face Hotel (above).
Once the pinnacle of Sri Lanka hotels, she's fighting against the 21st century's giant casino hotels (below) with plush carpets, rather than creaky floorboards.
When Colombo is done, return travel to the airport, or to Galle or Kandy for a 2nd test, is included. If the series ends in Colombo, we have 4 nights in Jaffna for a super end to your Sri Lanka tour.
